A hydropedological approach to a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT: The Mantiqueira Range region is one of the most important headwaters in southeastern Brazil. In this context, the relationship between pedology and hydrology has been debated and analyzed in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science call hydropedology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hydropedological properties of a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, comparing two land-uses, native forest and pasture. The hydraulic conductivity results demonstrated that native forest (MFO) has a strong influence on this parameter, offering conditions for movement of water in the soil that are more adequate in this profile than in pasture....

Assessment of soil physical attributes at sowing row and inter-row under no-till system Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Blum,Julius; Giarola,Neyde Fabíola Balarezo; Silva,Álvaro Pires da; Guedes Filho,Osvaldo; Silva,Sâmala Glícia Carneiro; Eberhardt,Diogo Néia; Araújo,Suzana Romeiro.
In no-till systems, two different soil conditions are created during the sowing operation: row and inter-row positions. The objectives of this study were to evaluate, using static and dynamic soil attributes, the influence of no-till sowing operation on creating better physical environment for soybean crop growth. A field transect with clay content ranging from 150 to 400 g kg-1 was selected in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, from a Typic Hapludox that has been cultivated under no-till system for 16 years. After soybean harvest, 68 undisturbed soil samples were collected at both sowing row and inter-row positions. The following soil properties were evaluated: saturated hydraulic conductivity, air permeability, bulk density, total porosity, soil...

Effect of two-axle and three-axle sugarbeet tanker harvester on selected soil-physical properties in dry and wet soil conditions CIGR Journal
Moitzi, Gerhard; Amon, Stefan; Klik, Andreas; Schwen, Andreas.
The effects of two-axle and three-axle sugarbeet harvester under dry (gravimetric soil water content 20%) and wet (gravimentric soil water content 30%) soil conditions on bulk density, soil penetration resistance and saturated hydraulic conductivity were determined in a long-term non-ploughed field with a silty loam soil in the Pannonian region of Austria. The tyre-inflation pressure of the sugarbeet harvester was set to 140 kPa in the front axle and 190 kPa in the middle and rear axles. The total weight of the three-axle harvester was distributed equally with about 20 Mg each axle. Two-axle harvester distributed the total weight of 49.1 Mg to the rear axle with 27.3 Mg and to the front axle with 21.8 Mg.The differences of bulk density (10-15 cm, 25-30 cm,...

Physical quality of an Oxisol after different periods of management systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rossetti,Karina de Vares; Centurion,José Frederico; Sousa Neto,Eurico Lucas de.
Management systems may lead to a loss of soil physical quality as a result of removal of the plant cover and excessive agricultural mechanization. The hypothesis of this study was that the soil aggregate stability, bulk density, macro- and microporosity, and the S index and saturated hydraulic conductivity may be used as indicators of the soil physical quality. The aim was to study the effects of different periods and managements on the physical attributes of a medium-textured Red Oxisol under soybean and corn for two growing seasons, and determine which layers are most susceptible to variations. A completely randomized experimental design was used with split plots (five treatments and four layers), with four replications. The treatments in 2008/09...

Predicting Runoff Risks by Digital Soil Mapping Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Mayesse Aparecida da; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton; Oliveira,Anna Hoffmann; Candido,Bernardo Moreira.
ABSTRACT Digital soil mapping (DSM) permits continuous mapping soil types and properties through raster formats considering variation within soil class, in contrast to the traditional mapping that only considers spatial variation of soils at the boundaries of delineated polygons. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of SoLIM (Soil Land Inference Model) for two sets of environmental variables on digital mapping of saturated hydraulic conductivity and solum depth (A + B horizons) and to apply the best model on runoff risk evaluation. The study was done in the Posses watershed, MG, Brazil, and SoLIM was applied for the following sets of co-variables: 1) terrain attributes (AT): slope, plan curvature, elevation and topographic wetness...

Soil physical and hydraulic properties in the Donato stream basin, RS, Brazil. Part 1: Spatial variability AGRIAMBI
Siqueira,Tirzah M.; Louzada,José A. S.; Pedrollo,Olavo C.; Castro,Nilza M. dos R.; Oliveira,Marquis H. C. de.
ABSTRACT The processes of water flow and water storage in the soil are directly associated with its hydraulic properties, which may vary significantly in space. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a spatial analysis of saturated hydraulic conductivity and the parameters of the soil water retention curve in the Donato basin, located in the municipality of Pejuçara, in the northwest region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with geographic coordinates between 28º 25’ 34” S and 53º 40’ 30” W, and 28º 24’ 50” S and 53º 41’ 30” W, 590 m of altitude. Undisturbed soil samples (total of 55) were collected from August to November of 2012. The results have demonstrated larger variability for hydraulic conductivity and for the parameter α of the retention...

Soil physical attributes in forms of sowing the annual winter pasture and intervals between grazing Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Veiga,Milton da; Balbinot Junior,Alvadi Antonio; Oliveira,Daniela Aparecida de.
The sowing of winter pastures in areas used for summer grain production and their management under direct cattle grazing can cause changes in soil physical attributes, whose intensity depends on the degree of soil mobilization, grazing interval, stocking rate and weather. To study these aspects it was conducted over four years an experiment in a randomized block with split plots design and four replications. In the main plots were applied two forms of sowing the annual winter pasture (direct seeding and seeding + harrowing) and, in the subplots, four intervals between grazing (7, 14 and 28 days and ungrazed). Undisturbed soil cores were sampled at the end of each grazing cycle, in the 0-0.05 m layer to determine the saturated hydraulic conductivity and...

Menezes,Heitor R. de; Almeida,Brivaldo G. de; Almeida,Ceres D. G. C. de; Bennett,John M.; Silva,Emanuelle M. da; Freire,Maria B. G. dos S..
ABSTRACT This research studied threshold electrolyte concentration (TEC) of irrigation water and its effect on the infiltration rate of two contrasting soils from Pernambuco state, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the Soil Chemistry and Salinity Laboratory of Federal Rural University of Pernambuco. Each soil was packed in five Buchner funnels, where one funnel from each soil was submitted to treatment with solution of electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 or 8.0 dS m-1. For each funnel containing soil, an increasing ratio of NaCl to CaCl2 was applied in a treatment solution to achieve 10 increasing values of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) from 0 to 100. These solutions were applied through a Mariotte bottle, with a constant hydraulic...
